Boakai Returns Home After ECOWAS Golden Jubilee in Accra -Hails ECOWAS as Pillar of Regional Unity, Stability
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has returned home to a warm reception in Monrovia after leading a high-level Liberian delegation to Accra, Ghana, where he participated in the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The Golden Jubilee event marked five decades of regional cooperation, peace, and integration among West African nations.
While in Accra, President Boakai addressed regional leaders and dignitaries at the official launch of the anniversary celebration held at the Accra International Conference Centre.
In a passionate speech, the Liberian leader described ECOWAS as a “beacon of hope” for the people of West Africa and reaffirmed Liberia’s unwavering commitment to the bloc’s core principles.
“ECOWAS has been instrumental in promoting stability and development across West Africa. Liberia remains steadfast in its support for the organization’s mission and will continue to work collaboratively with fellow member states to address our shared challenges and aspirations,” President Boakai stated.
The 50th anniversary celebration provided an opportunity for member states to reflect on the progress ECOWAS has made in areas such as peacekeeping, conflict resolution, and economic cooperation.
Leaders also explored strategies to address contemporary regional threats, including terrorism, climate change, and youth unemployment.
President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s own journey in regional diplomacy, praising the critical role ECOWAS has played in supporting Liberia during its turbulent periods.
He emphasized that Liberia’s current peace and democratic consolidation would not have been possible without ECOWAS's intervention and solidarity.
Accompanying the President to the regional summit were key officials including Foreign Minister Sarah Beysolow-Nyanti, Minister of State Without Portfolio Mamaka Bility, National Security Advisor Samuel Kofi Woods, Economic Adviser Morley Kamara, and Deputy Finance Minister for Fiscal Affairs Anthony Myers. The Liberian delegation actively participated in panel discussions and bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event.
The Liberian leader also used the occasion to engage with regional counterparts on bilateral matters, including trade, security, and education.
Sources say the President held fruitful side meetings aimed at expanding Liberia’s economic diplomacy across West Africa.
In his congratulatory message to ECOWAS, President Boakai expressed optimism about the future, stating that the bloc is well-positioned to lead Africa’s push for greater continental integration.
“We must consolidate our gains and dream even bigger for the next 50 years,” he noted.
As he arrived back in Monrovia on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the President was greeted by government officials, dignitaries, and supporters who praised his continued efforts to elevate Liberia’s presence on the regional and global stage.
With the ECOWAS Golden Jubilee behind him, President Boakai returns to face pressing domestic priorities, but his message in Accra of unity, shared destiny, and regional pride continues to resonate across the country.
